C. 19THC. EXQUISITE BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE LACE PLACEMAT SET W/LOVEBIRDS,VASES,ROSES. There are pieces of lace that actually take my breath away! This offering is one of those moments and I feel quite privileged to even see this set. The design is of course marvelous, it is so rare to find Point De Gaze lace like this. On the table runner there are large decorative urns or vases that have overflowing florals , roses with fine tree dimensional petals, scrollwork, ribbons, meandering vines and florals and of course best of all.... those wonderful lovebirds. In almost 40 or so years, I have only seen a few pieces that have had either figurals or birds in the design. The amount of lacework, the dexterity of the lacemakers skills are truly superb. There are elaborate oval vignettes with the tiniest lavish needlelace fillings and very ornate scrollwork throughout the lace. A set like this could only have been created for the wealthiest collector and I wish I knew who the origial collector was.. but I don't. I do know that this has come from one of the very best lace collectors,this person had a sublime eye and truly understood beauty. It is a honor to handle this collection. The set consists of one long table runner measuring approx. 55" by almost 22". There are six placemats measuring approx. 18" by almost 12". There are approx. 60 birds in the designs on this set, numerous roses, ribbons, vases , all worked on a hand made Droscel ground, that in itself is quite amazing. The finest translucent lawn has been used at the center and has very fine whitework and raised satin stitch embroidery. around the edges. This is a magnificent offering. This is a work of art!! In good strong condition.
