EXCEPTIONAL ITALIAN TABLECLOTH W/BACCHUS,CHERUBS,CORNUCOPIA.
Amazing amount of work on this ornate Italian tablecloth or bedspread!.Measuring apprx. 140" by 86" wide, this seems to be a talecloth but can also be used as a bedspread or panel to hang on the wall. if desired. The ornate design is based on a gridwork Drawnwork background and has ..the Greek God Dionysus, ,Roman God Bacchus or the Roman God Liber in the vignettes. All were God of fertility and wine, festivities etc. Mnay Italian designs soemtimes used the Gods to celebrate the rite of Spring and the celebration of the harvest etc. were all themes that were used. There are cherubs , elaborate overflowing cornucopia, majestic scrollwork and raised satin stitch embroidery used in this cloth. The workmanship is absolutely superb...the design quite magnificent. This item was part of a estate that had most of the items emroidered with crowns and so was probably made for some member of the nobility.(Item #ALT65)
